Answer #1:

If you are looking for cheap performance in small bikes 50 -200cc and for the usage that you have mentioned, Atomik is the way to go.These are cheap and deliver for their price tag. There are a wide range of bikes, go to their website. If you can afford a little more, buy a yamaha dirt bike. Best in its class.

Answer #2:

What you want is called a "dual sport" motorcycle.

First of all, avoid Chinese bikes like the plague. They break often and parts are obsolete in a matter of months. Buy one and it will be collecting dust under your carport before the year is out because you can't get your hands on that $20 part you've just gotta have.

Stick with Japanese or European bikes. Even a well-used bike in good condition you can get parts and service for is better than a brand new "never-was" any time.

I am only familiar with Japanese bikes. The smallest dual sport you can get from Japan is the Yamaha TW200. If you don't like that, there are several in the 250cc category, including, the Honda 230L, the Kawasaki KLX250, and several others by Yamaha and Suzuki. Any of these would be fine to own, but I would give the edge to to Honda's 230L for beginners.

Just visit their websites and search for "dual sport" to see the current line-up. Once you know what is available you can search all the usual sources for used ones too.
